Almost going bonkers from the lack of fish, I have been busy with my boats. Repainting, repairing, and refitting - something here, something there has kept me relatively busy this spring. Occasionally, I will wander into someone's tackle shop and hear a rumour of a "dark" fish being taken along with the word "holdover", but I have yet to catch one. I suspect I may not want to - it may also be a rumour (I just started it) that these holdovers have some genetic traits from their relatives the eels and that is why they stay here. ????? No - just kidding !! It won't be long though, as there are some herring in the runs, and we have had a couple of nice sunny days in a row to warm up the water temperatures. I keep hearing the peepers, so I know the eels are coming out from the mud also. Soon enough the small stripers will be here. If I was anxious enough to go looking for them I would try the south Cape side that faces Nantucket Sound. The beaches and points of Cotuit are usually the first to have a schoolie or two reported. I expect to hear of some this week. The next spot would be Red River Beach in Harwich at the end of Depot Road. The jetties there are a good spot as long as the wind isn't from the east or too hard from the sou' west. After a week or two of the sound action we will have them regularly in Pleasant Bay. More on that next week. Thanks, Bruce
