Hi Folks, As of August 4, the tuna fishing has definitely picked up from its slow start. Last week we landed a 100” bluefin and a half dozen really large porbeagle sharks on our tuna charter. These white shark look a likes are all of 300 pounds and almost as great of a fight as a bluefin. The sharks are a pain for me as they cost me a $6 hook and a $20 leader each time we get one. Its part of the game I guess. We are drifting live mackerel under the balloons, instead of the usual trolled squid bars so far this season, as it has been producing well for us. In the early part of the charter, on the way out, we will stop to jig up some live bait (mackerel) for the live well, and then proceed out to the tuna grounds. On Thursday 8/2, I had a five year repeat customer Seth B., from Montana, that has come with me five times so far. He informed me that he has caught a bluefin tuna with me every time he has come with me. I only can say its not me, its Seth. He is by far the luckiest tuna charter customer I have had so far. I don’t know of any that have gone 5 for 5! You can see Seth and his 68” bluefin on my Capeshores Charters Facebook page and on my Capeshores Instagram page.
The striper action has slowed in the last week. I have had to resort to trolling the dreaded umbrella rigs to get limits of striped bass for my customers. The fish are not bunched up enough for dropping vertical jigs on them and they are out of the rips at Bearse’s for now. It may be a tide thing, a water temperature thing or maybe something I don’t have a clue about, but its been off for about 4-5 days now. (that means it will recover soon.) We are tuna fishing tomorrow and then bass fishing for the rest of the week. I have no openings until August 22. In fact, the dates of August 22, 23, 24 are open and are VERY GOOD SMALL TIDES for a bluefin tuna charter. If you are seriously interested, call me to reserve one of these very limited days. September has very good tuna charter days as well, so if the mighty bluefin is on your wish list to do, give me a call and set aside a day. There is only a day or two in each week of September that is open and unbooked, so make sure to think ahead and reserve your trip now.
Thanks very much,
Bruce & Marilyn S
