When I was driving by the Ryder’s Cove herring run yesterday, I saw a good sized gathering of gulls at the entrance to the creek there. That tells me that there are herring scouts moving into the Cape waters, and soon the game fishes of striped bass, bluefish, bluefin tuna, and others will be arriving as well. As sunlight warms the waters, the phytoplankton blooms and Nature’s food chain “engine of life”, once slowed by winter, starts up again.
Also, as the sun makes an increased appearance, the human activity increases as well. I have noticed on the sunny days, my phone rings more often with charter requests and questions then that on the more gray versions. I too, have used the warmer sunny days to increase activity and work on getting the boats ready with the sanding and painting of the bottoms, gel coating, and what few small repairs are needed. Every day now, I get a call or two with questions about a charter or to make a reservation. I do expect this season to be a busy one, as folks are just done with Covid, vaccinations have mostly been completed, and a day on the water doing a Cape Cod fishing or whale watch charter is relaxing and good for the soul. Last night, on the drive home, I noticed every restaurant parking lot was full of folks dining out. There are many out of state license plates on the roadways. The realtors on Cape are lamenting the lack of available home rentals, as they are already booked up for the summer ! Home prices have skyrocketed here in the last year.
With all that in mind, if you wish to go fishing or other type of a charter this year, you would be well advised to reserve your day early, especially if you know when you are goin to be here. There are some tide related advantages to improving your chances of success when selecting days. The crowded days tend to make things harder. Bluefin tuna charters tend to do better on small tide days. Striper charters are the opposite, they bite better on days when there is a decent tide or current running. Previous archived fish reports have those dates listed - scroll through to find them.
