Hi Folks !
There sure are a lot of fish in the area ! Most of these are still schoolies but there are some real nice fish in the 20 pound range being taken as well. These fish are hungry and feed heavily when moving like they are at this time of the year. If you can get big baits, you will get the biggest fish out of the school. The best bait on Cape Cod right now is a live pogy or menhaden. That swimming pogy will bring the largest bass in the area running !You can get a special use permit from the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries to allow you to gillnet menhaden from select bodies of water. You must specify which body of water and you are limited to 200 square feet of net. You cannot take any other fish specie other than menhaden. They don’t stay alive too well unless you’ve got a livewell with a good running water supply.
Many of us are content to catch the smaller schoolie size fish that are seemingly everywhere. Last Sunday, just before the Red Sox’s “Mothers Day Miracle” comeback, Kathy and I went fishing in Pleasant Bay with the little rods. The tables have turned ! It seemed that it was her day to gloat over her amazingly multiple times of having a bent rod ! The fish were all over her outfit and were thumbing their noses at me !! Oh well, even though I was outfished that day, it was pretty good fun just listening to her giggle like a little girl, everytime she would catch another one.
It seems the best fishing outings are the ones shared with a friend or loved one. Just yesterday, I was in the Goose Hummock shop looking for some hook baits for my squid rigs, and I saw this young man of around 10-12 years old. It was apparent that he was going to be taking his Dad fishing, by the sunglasses, bag of tackle in hand and apprehensive looking Dad hanging nearby. I told him I thought it was a good thing that he was taking the old guy fishing and that we Dads needed that once in a while. I asked him where he was headed, what you gonna use etc. and eventually wrote him directions on the back of a tide chart to the River Road Landing. I hope he managed to catch a few fish for the “poor old Dad”.Good Fishing,
