Today is a day off and it is because of the winds from the Northeast that have scheduled one for me. Being that it is my birthday, it may be just as well. I met the boys from Alan's scheduled charter at the Pier this morning, and as we watched the flag furiously trying to remove itself from the pole, we decided we were all a little to old and possibly smart enough to not feel like getting beat up by Mother Nature and the Ocean this morning. Yesterday, we spent 12 hours on the water trying to entice one of the many (more than 50) tuna we marked on the fathometer to take one of our offerings, to no avail. I trolled 3 of my best squid bars and a naked and skirted balllyhoo from dawn and into the morning slack, and never got a bite. We ended up saving the day by catching a half dozen or so nice 35-40 inch bass in about a half hour on the way in as somewhat of a way to take the sting out of another skunk tuna trip.
It seems the striped bass are stacked up in the rips pretty good as I have had limits in a very short time every time my bass charters and I have gone to this spot. These fish are from 27 to 45 inches long, which is a little unusual to see this wide range of sizes, but there are lots of them. We usually will hook up to one or two on every drift in the rips. The winds wuill most likely cause some cancellations this week, but the next week is predicted to have some decent weather, and I do have enough openings to get you out for a 7 hour trip.
