Hi Folks,
We got blown off the waters today. The forecast for Wednesday was for east winds increasing and staying constant through Friday. Yet as of Tuesday night, and even on Wednesday morning, there wasn't a puff of wind in the air. In watching the doppler radar and the barometric pressure maps I realized that this thing had stalled south of New Jersey and the winds were most likely not going to materialize till later in the day. I convinced my charter that they were only going to get one of their two scheduled days in, and perhaps we should try to get both a tuna and a bass trip done in the one day. I just love it when a "plan" actually comes together ! We managed to take a nice 57 inch bluefin on the late morning slack, and then motored to the striper fishing grounds and finished the day with a limit of bass and one bluefish.
Today the winds are blowing what the forecast actually says it is going to be. Unlike last Sunday, when we woke up to strong northeast winds and the tide running against the wind making us cancel the scheduled trip. No forecast called for that wind !!! I have fished all my life. The weather service ( NOAA ) used to forecast the wind with actual ranges, such as 5 to 15 variable, 10 to 20 and 15 to 25 etc. Now we have become such a politically correct society that we have NOAA forecasting "5 to 15 - gusting to 25", and "10 to 20 - gusting to 30" etc. There is no goddamned accuracy and as watermen we are forced to read between the lines and be better weather forecasters than the supposed "weather forecasters" ! That was my rant for the day, but here's a thought.....I just wonder how our government is going to manage our health care system as well as they give a weather report. Wait... what about the NMFS, USPS or the IRS ?
I imagine Friday may be dicey, but I have openings starting Saturday 9-12 through Thursday 9-17, and 9-24 and 25 and 9-28 through 9-30 for either bluefin tuna or 7 hr striped bass charters. I recommend only the 7 hr versions of striper trips this late in the year. It allows me the travel time to get you to rips where there is cooler water and decent large fish. My last bass charter had 34 stripers, 3 bluefish and 3 dogfish. Yesterday, we had a nice 130 pound bluefin by 9:30 am and we then went bass fishing and caught the limit in 2 hours !
