Hi Folks,Capeshores Charters had the first Bluefin Tuna charter of the season yesterday, and we managed to land a legal salable fish. I did go out the day before to scout the area, and as a result, was able to put my customers on the fish for their trip. We left the dock at 4:45 am and hooked into a smashing, crashing, double of really nice sized tuna at around 6:15 am. After a few seconds the 180 pound test leader of one fish parted, leaving us to fight the one remaining fish we had on. We darted that fish roughly a half hour later, after a really touch and go fight. This bluefin tuna measured 73 and 1/4" long and after dressing (removed head, tail etc) weighed 180 pounds. That was a noble fish and fought well. Thank you, fish.
The amount of whales and bait in the area where we are fishing is incredible. We hooked up in the middle of a group of birds and pilot whales that were spread out over a 1/4 mile area. There are several harpoon boats and spotter planes working in the zone as well. Based on the reports of other captains, and what I'm seeing caught, it seems that there are decent numbers of bluefin of both large and smaller sizes this year and looks promising to be a good year for charter fishing catches.
I'm headed to Handkerchief Shoals today for a short striped bass charter. I think its a little early but I have a report and I'm willing to make the run to go check it out. I have some fresh frozen squid from the Nantucket Sound fish weirs, courtesy of Kurt "Lobster Man" Martin and if there is a striped bass in the area I will catch some !If you would like to come along call or email me for and questions you might have about my charters and what to expect.
